Gyaneshwor Singh Makes History as First Army Officer from Manipur Village, Commissioned from IMA

In a significant moment for his village, 24-year-old Gyaneshwor Singh from Manipur was among the 491 cadets commissioned into the Indian Army at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun on Saturday. He achieved the distinction of being the first Army officer from his village.

Lieutenant Gyaneshwor Singh, who hails from Okram village in Thoubal district, was accompanied by his proud parents and younger sister at the Passing Out Parade. His commissioning was an emotional and proud occasion for his family and the entire village.

Training Amid Manipur Violence

Gyaneshwor faced unique challenges on his path to becoming an officer. While he was still in training at the National Defence Academy (NDA), ethnic violence broke out in Manipur, keeping the region in a state of tension.

Thoubal district is situated near Churachandpur and Bishnupur, areas often affected by conflicts between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Being away from his family during this unrest caused him considerable worry.

“At the NDA, we could speak to our families only once a week after obtaining permission. When the violence erupted, I was very anxious about my family’s safety,” he mentioned, reflecting on the difficult period.

Support from Officers and Batchmates

Gyaneshwor credited the support of NDA faculty and fellow cadets for helping him maintain focus during these trying times.

“Officers, particularly those from Assam, went out of their way to check on my family through contacts in Manipur. My batchmates provided constant support and encouragement, which enabled me to continue my training,” he said, as he wiped tears from his mother’s face.

Family’s Pride and Village Inspiration

His father, Okram Biramani Singh, a school teacher, recounted how tense the situation was at home.

“Even though our village remained safe, nearby areas were affected. We knew our son was worried, so we continuously reminded him to focus on his training. Today, he is a source of pride for our village, and youngsters now see him as an inspiration to serve the nation,” he remarked.

Gyaneshwor’s mother, Mihenbi Devi, and his younger sister, Gyaneshwori, expressed that the moment was indescribable.

“Inspired by his seniors at Sainik School to join the Army, he later encouraged many village youngsters to seek his guidance after joining the NDA. We now hope more youth will follow his example and serve the country,” they stated.

A Symbol of Hope and Determination

Lieutenant Gyaneshwor Singh’s journey from training amid ethnic violence to his commissioning at the IMA is a testament to resilience, discipline, and national service, inspiring youth in conflict-affected regions across India.
