Gurugram Police Arrest Parking Attendant in Assault on Retired IAF Group Captain Amit Kumar Gupta
Gurugram Police have arrested a 24-year-old parking attendant within hours of a complaint filed in the assault case involving retired Indian Air Force Group Captain Amit Kumar Gupta, a Kargil War veteran, after a parking dispute at a commercial complex in the city on September 10.
The accused, identified as Deepak Mavi, a resident of Kot village in Faridabad, was taken into custody seven hours after the case was registered, police said. He works as a parking attendant at the site where the altercation took place.
According to Gupta’s complaint, the incident occurred at around 8 pm when he had gone with his family for dinner at a restaurant in the commercial complex. Gupta, who had served in the Indian Air Force during Operation Safed Sagar in the 1999 Kargil conflict, had dropped his family near the restaurant and gone to park his vehicle when the confrontation began.
He alleged that he was sent from one parking area to another before an argument broke out with a parking attendant over where the vehicle should be parked and the arrangements at the site. The disagreement then escalated sharply, he said, and he was attacked with an iron rod.
Police said the assault left the retired officer with a serious head injury and a fracture to his left arm and elbow. CCTV footage reviewed during the preliminary probe also showed Gupta being struck with an iron rod, according to investigators.
After the attack, Gupta was taken to hospital for treatment. Police later went to the hospital to record his statement, but he reportedly said he was not in a condition to give a detailed account at that time and would do so later.
Once the complaint was formally taken up, police registered an FIR at Sector 65 Police Station under relevant provisions of law. The case then moved quickly to the arrest of Mavi.
During questioning, Mavi allegedly told police that the dispute began over parking and that, in a fit of anger, he picked up an iron pipe lying nearby and hit the complainant, injuring his arm. Police have not released any further details on the exact sequence of events beyond what has emerged from the complaint, CCTV review and initial questioning.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the assault and the events leading up to it.
