Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla Awarded Ashoka Chakra for Historic ISS Mission

New Delhi, January 25, 2026 – Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force, who became the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS), is set to be honored with the Ashoka Chakra, India's most prestigious peacetime gallantry award. The announcement, made on Republic Day 2026, recognizes his remarkable contributions to space exploration and national pride.

The Ashoka Chakra is bestowed for outstanding bravery, acts of heroism, or self-sacrifice outside of combat. Group Captain Shukla's recognition represents a rare instance where this award is given for accomplishments in space research and international scientific collaboration.

In June 2025, Group Captain Shukla took part in Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), a private space mission organized by Axiom Space in collaboration with NASA and SpaceX. Serving as the mission pilot, he spent around 18 days on the ISS, conducting scientific research and representing India on the global stage. This mission made him the second Indian citizen to journey into space, following Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma in 1984, and the first Indian to board the International Space Station.

His mission, covering millions of kilometers and numerous orbits, is celebrated as a significant milestone for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Gaganyaan programme. The venture provided essential data and experience that will aid India's forthcoming human spaceflight initiatives.

The President announced the gallantry awards, including the Ashoka Chakra for Group Captain Shukla, alongside honors for other military personnel. This acknowledgment highlights India's expanding role in space exploration and the courage shown by its service members across various fields.

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla's illustrious career includes over 2,000 hours of flight experience as a test pilot in the Indian Air Force. His selection for the Ax-4 mission underscores his expertise and commitment. The award will be formally presented during the Republic Day celebrations.
