General Upendra Dwivedi Endorses Bhutan’s Gyalsung Academy for Youth Empowerment During Visit

General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of Army Staff, recently visited Bhutan's Gyalsung Academy in Jamtsholing. This academy, initiated by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, is a flagship national service training program launched in 2019. It aims to equip over 13,000 Bhutanese youth annually with military training and practical skills such as coding, agriculture, and life management.

The academy commenced its inaugural training cycle in September 2024, supported by a $10 million aid package from India. During his visit, General Dwivedi was briefed on the program's objectives and infrastructure. He praised the initiative for its comprehensive approach to nation-building and youth empowerment, aligning with the vision of Bhutan's Fifth King for a robust and self-sufficient country.

This visit highlights the strengthening security and training cooperation between India and Bhutan, especially against the backdrop of growing regional challenges. Since 2020, China's increased presence along Bhutan's borders has prompted closer military coordination between the two nations. India plays a significant role through its Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT) of 2,000 personnel, which provides support to the Royal Bhutan Army's training efforts.

General Dwivedi's statements underscored the significance of collaborative regional development. His comments echoed discussions from bilateral talks in Kolkata in February 2025, where both countries deliberated on integrating advanced technologies into joint military training exercises.

Beginning on July 1, General Dwivedi's four-day official visit includes several high-level meetings. He was welcomed ceremonially at Tashichhodzong and met with the King and Queen of Bhutan, reaffirming the enduring and strategic partnership between India and Bhutan.
