General Anil Chauhan Honored with Ceremonial Guard of Honour as Chief of Defence Staff Tenure Ends
On May 30, General Anil Chauhan, the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), was honored with a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the South Block lawns in New Delhi, marking the end of his tenure as the top military officer in India.
This ceremonial farewell followed the completion of General Chauhan's extended term as CDS and Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs, which was previously extended by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet in September 2025.
General Chauhan, who began his service in the Indian Army in 1981, has had a commendable career spanning over 40 years. Throughout his service, he held numerous significant command, staff, and strategic positions. His achievements have been recognized with prestigious awards including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.
Champion of Jointness and Integration
During his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff, General Chauhan was instrumental in promoting greater integration among the three military services. His efforts were focused on enhancing joint operational capabilities through reforms and strategies aimed at strengthening tri-services coordination, operational synergy, and progressing towards military theatreisation.
Under his leadership, the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff saw significant advancements, especially in fostering collaboration among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, alongside promoting indigenous capability development and technological innovations.
Key Initiatives During His Tenure
One of the major initiatives undertaken by General Chauhan towards the end of his term was the release of the Joint Air Defence Doctrine. This comprehensive document was designed to improve India’s multi-layered air defence system by enhancing integration, interoperability, and operational preparedness among the Defence Forces.
Additionally, he inaugurated the Tri-Services Tele Directory Web Application, which was internally developed by the Directorate General of Signals. This platform aims to enhance coordination, communication, and integrated functioning across the Armed Forces.
Earlier in the month, during his final meeting of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC), senior military leaders recognized General Chauhan’s substantial contributions towards strengthening jointness, integration, and operational effectiveness across the services.
‘JAI’ Vision for Future Armed Forces
In discussions with personnel from the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff and the Department of Military Affairs, General Chauhan consistently highlighted the importance of his "JAI" initiative — focusing on Jointness, Atmanirbharta (self-reliance), and Innovation as the foundation for transforming India's military in the future.
Defence officials have pointed out that his tenure will be notable for its emphasis on institutional reforms, technological developments, indigenous capability enhancement, and efforts to build a more integrated and future-ready military force.
General Chauhan's service concluded with the ceremonial Guard of Honour, marking the end of a distinguished chapter in his career, leaving a lasting impact on India's defence structure and the journey towards tri-services integration.
