GE F404 Engine Supply Restored: Boost to India's Tejas Mk1A Fighter Jet Production

In a notable advancement for India's domestic fighter jet initiative, General Electric (GE) has supplied the second GE F404 engine to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This development marks a critical phase in the production schedule of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A. The delivery, finalized on July 13, signifies the stabilization of GE's production line following significant delays that had impeded progress on the ambitious ₹48,000 crore agreement established in 2021.

The contract, an agreement between HAL and the Indian Air Force (IAF), involves the production of 73 Tejas Mk1A fighter jets along with 10 trainer aircraft. Although initial deliveries were set for 2024, production was hindered due to the suspension of GE's F404 engine manufacturing line. At the time the order was placed, GE had ceased F404 production and required special authorization from the Indian government to restart the supply chain.

Reviving the production line was challenging. Many original GE vendors had shifted to different supply chains during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to further delays. This supply chain bottleneck extended engine delivery timelines by over 18 months, significantly affecting HAL’s aircraft production schedule.

The first F404 engine was eventually delivered on March 26, 2025. With the second engine arriving in July, GE has pledged to deliver two engines monthly, matching HAL’s increased production capacity. This development marks a recovery for the Tejas Mk1A program, enabling HAL to accelerate production and adhere to revised delivery timelines.

The Tejas Mk1A, featuring AESA radar, advanced electronic warfare systems, and increased payload capacity, signifies India’s progression towards a 4.5-generation fighter capability. Recently released images from HAL displayed aircraft tail numbers up to LA5041, indicating that at least nine airframes are in various stages of final assembly. The first Mk1A aircraft, LA5033, was unveiled earlier this year.

Initially, HAL planned to produce 16 aircraft annually. With the improved rate of engine supply, the state-owned aerospace company now targets an annual output of 24 jets. Despite previous setbacks, HAL is optimistic about fulfilling the entire delivery schedule on time.

In a further enhancement to India's domestic aerospace industry, the IAF is expected to place an additional order for 97 Tejas Mk1A fighters, bringing the total number beyond 180 units. This expanded order will support HAL’s long-term production strategy and validate continued investments in infrastructure and supply chain.

The restored GE F404 supply chain and HAL’s reinforced vendor network are projected to ensure seamless integration, quicker turnaround times, and enhanced program resilience. With 12 aircraft anticipated to be delivered by the end of this fiscal year, India's premier fighter jet program is back on track.
