From Faridabad Village to OTA Gaya: BUO Sagar Bhadana’s Journey to the Indian Army

Battalion Under Officer Sagar Bhadana’s path to the Indian Army began far from a military cantonment. Raised in a humble agrarian family in a village near Faridabad, Haryana, he grew up in a close-knit joint household with no service background, where the idea of success was typically associated with securing a stable government job. Over time, however, his own ambitions moved in a different direction, toward a career in the Armed Forces.

His early years were shaped by village life, strong family ties and a keen interest in sports. Those surroundings helped build the discipline, cooperation and resilience that would later matter as he moved into military-oriented training and selection. The values he absorbed at home became central to the journey that followed.

After finishing school in the village, Sagar enrolled in a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at Government Boys Polytechnic Institute, Okhla, Delhi. The move to the capital for technical education expanded his exposure beyond his home environment and eventually brought him into contact with an experience that would alter the direction of his career aspirations.

During his diploma period, he joined the National Cadet Corps, which gave him his first serious introduction to military life. Through NCC, he encountered the discipline, camaraderie and sense of purpose associated with uniformed service. What started as an extracurricular activity gradually became a genuine interest in joining the Armed Forces.

The turning point came when he met a soldier from the elite Parachute Regiment (Special Forces). That interaction left a deep impression on him. The soldier’s experiences and words helped convert Sagar’s curiosity into a firm determination to pursue a military career.

From that point, the Armed Forces were no longer just an abstract possibility. The encounter showed him a life built around service, courage and responsibility, and gave shape to an ambition that was not part of his family’s traditional career expectations. His goal of joining the military became clear and deliberate.

After completing his education, Sagar entered professional life but did not abandon his officer aspirations. He worked as an NGO worker and football coach while simultaneously preparing for the Combined Defence Services Examination. Managing employment, social engagement and exam preparation demanded a high level of self-discipline.

His persistence eventually produced results. Sagar cleared the Combined Defence Services Examination and went on to secure a recommendation at the Services Selection Board. The recommendation came in his third attempt, making the outcome especially meaningful after repeated efforts and the setbacks that came before it.

That third attempt reflected more than exam success. It showed his willingness to learn from earlier failures and keep working toward the same objective without losing focus. The process tested not only his knowledge and aptitude, but also his patience and resolve.

Throughout the journey, his parents remained a major source of support. Coming from a civilian family with no military background, their encouragement gave him the confidence to follow an unconventional path. His father helped instil courage and resilience, while his mother nurtured perseverance, discipline and determination.

Those family values became the foundation on which he built the next phase of his career. Long before he entered officer training, they had already shaped the character required to handle the pressures of the process. In Sagar’s case, military ambition was rooted as much in upbringing as in personal choice.

His admission to the Officers Training Academy, Gaya, marked the next major step in that progression. The parade grounds of OTA represented the end of a long journey that had taken him from a village near Faridabad to technical education in Delhi, NCC training, work as an NGO worker and football coach, several attempts at the SSB process and finally officer training.

As Battalion Under Officer, Sagar has taken on leadership responsibilities within the academy environment. The appointment is significant not only because of the position itself, but also because it reflects how far he has come from a background with no service tradition. His first exposure to the Armed Forces came through NCC and a chance conversation with a Special Forces soldier, yet those moments were enough to set his course.

His story shows how a mix of ordinary experiences can lead to an extraordinary ambition. Village upbringing, sports, technical education, social work, coaching and a brief but influential interaction with a soldier all became stepping stones in a larger journey toward military service.

For Sagar Bhadana, the road to the Indian Army has been shaped by gradual but steady transformation. NCC introduced him to the Armed Forces, the Parachute Regiment soldier gave his dream direction, professional life tested his ability to balance responsibilities, and the SSB process tested his persistence. Each stage brought him closer to the parade ground at OTA Gaya.
