Former Indian Army Officer and Veteran Actor Achyut Potdar Dies at 91

Achyut Potdar, a veteran actor celebrated for his contributions both in defence service and in cinema, passed away at the age of 91 on August 18 in Thane. His funeral is scheduled to take place today in the city.

Potdar's journey was a unique combination of discipline and creativity. He graduated with a degree in economics in 1961 and briefly pursued a career as a professor. He then joined the Indian Army through an emergency commission following the 1962 war, serving until 1967 and retiring as a Captain from the Army Services Corps. He furthered his professional career at Indian Oil Corporation, maintaining a reputation for integrity and dedication throughout.

His foray into the film industry began at the age of 44, marking a significant turning point in his life. Over the next 40 years, Potdar appeared in over 125 films in Hindi and Marathi, as well as nearly 100 television serials.

Among his most notable film roles were in 3 Idiots, where his dialogue “Kehna Kya Chahte Ho” gained iconic status, as well as Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Parineeta, Tezaab, Rangeela, Vaastav, Dabangg 2, and Ventilator. On television, he captivated audiences with performances in Wagle Ki Duniya, Bharat Ki Khoj, Majha Hoshil Na, and Mrs. Tendulkar.

Colleagues and fans remember Potdar fondly for his warmth, humility, and impeccable comic timing, attributes that were deeply rooted in his military discipline and empathetic approach as a teacher.

Potdar leaves behind a dual legacy as both a patriot and an accomplished actor, inspiring many with his life story. From serving the nation in uniform to bringing joy to the masses through film and television, he exemplified a rare blend of service and artistic talent.
