First Woman Constable Achieves Landmark Out-of-Turn Promotion in BSF History

In an unprecedented achievement for the Border Security Force (BSF), Constable Shivani has become the first female constable to receive an out-of-turn promotion within a mere five months of joining, marking a significant milestone in the BSF’s 60-year history.

Breaking Barriers in the Force

Originating from Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, Shivani’s story exemplifies perseverance and dedication. As the daughter of a carpenter and the first in her family to join any of India’s Central Armed Police Forces, Shivani has made significant strides through her hard work. Now serving with the 155 Battalion in Punjab, she has become an inspiring figure for young women across the country who aspire to serve in uniform.

Reward for Sporting Excellence

The prestigious promotion was awarded by BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary in New Delhi on Thursday. Shivani's notable accomplishment of securing a silver medal at the 17th World Wushu Championship in Brazil, from August 31 to September 8, 2025, earned her this exceptional accolade.

Her advancement to Head Constable falls under the category for sportspersons who exhibit outstanding performances at international events, as stipulated by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

This achievement makes her the second constable in 22 years to receive an early promotion in BSF’s history. In 2024, Constable Anuj from the Central Wushu Team was similarly promoted after clinching a silver medal at the 10th Sanda World Cup in Jiangyin, China.

DG Chawdhary on Encouragement and Excellence

DG Daljit Singh Chawdhary praised Shivani's commitment and skill, describing her as a “true embodiment of BSF’s fighting spirit and sporting excellence.”

“Such promotions are not merely rewards; they serve as powerful incentives. When a sportsperson achieves international success, the entire force feels motivated. Shivani's accomplishments will inspire many more to strive for such heights,” the DG stated.

He further emphasized that the BSF provides its athletes with top-tier facilities, including expert coaching, physiotherapy, dietary plans, and the latest sports infrastructure, enabling them to reach their full potential.

Shivani’s Words of Inspiration

Expressing her gratitude after the ceremony, Head Constable Shivani remarked, “I joined the BSF on June 1, 2025, and today, just five months later, I’ve been promoted due to my performance at the World Championship. I train four hours daily—two in the morning and two in the evening. My next goal is to win gold at the World Cup.”

Encouraging her peers, she added, “Work hard, stay disciplined, and believe in yourself. If I can achieve this in such a short time, anyone who gives their best can do it too.”

A Moment of Pride for BSF and India

Out-of-turn promotions within the BSF are extremely rare and reserved for those who display extraordinary merit, bravery, or exceptional skill. Shivani’s recognition, achieved in just months, highlights the force’s evolving culture of honoring performance and developing young talent.

The ceremony was a proud moment for the BSF community, symbolizing empowerment, equality, and excellence.

With her medal shining and her new rank affixed to her uniform, Shivani has not only secured a promotion but also carved her name into the annals of India’s elite border force.
