Defence Ministry Signs ₹1,943-Crore Lease Deal for Two MQ-9B Sea Guardian Drones for Indian Navy
The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) to lease two MQ-9B Sea Guardian High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) for the Indian Navy for 30 months, in a move intended to bolster maritime surveillance across the Indian Ocean Region.
The deal is valued at approximately ₹1,943 crore and is aimed at strengthening the Navy’s ability to maintain persistent watch over large stretches of sea. At a time when maritime monitoring has become increasingly important in the Indian Ocean Region, the leased Sea Guardian systems are expected to add a long-duration aerial surveillance layer to the force’s existing capabilities.
The MQ-9B Sea Guardian is a HALE platform designed for extended operations over wide maritime areas. According to the information provided, the systems come fitted with advanced sensors, sophisticated payloads and other mission systems that allow them to carry out long-endurance surveillance missions. Their role will be to provide the Navy with continuous Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance coverage over expansive areas of the maritime domain.
Such persistent aerial monitoring is expected to help the Navy track maritime activity, follow developments at sea and improve situational awareness in areas of strategic interest. The platforms are also expected to enhance the service’s ability to detect and monitor unfolding situations at sea so that emerging maritime security concerns can be assessed and responded to in a timely manner.
The leasing arrangement comes as the Indian Navy continues to expand its use of unmanned and technology-enabled systems as part of wider modernisation and capability development efforts. By bringing in leased RPAS rather than waiting for a longer procurement cycle, the Navy will gain additional operational surveillance capacity for the 30-month period covered by the contract.
Beyond the immediate operational benefits, the agreement also fits into India’s broader effort to build a more technology-driven maritime surveillance architecture. With the Indian Ocean Region becoming more crowded and strategically significant, persistent monitoring of sea lanes and maritime activity has emerged as a key requirement for maintaining awareness across a vast and increasingly contested environment.
