Defence Ministry, HAL Ink Rs 2,312 Crore Deal for 8 Dornier 228 Aircraft to Boost Indian Coast Guard Operations

The Ministry of Defence has entered into a Rs 2,312 crore agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to procure eight Dornier 228 aircraft and associated Operational Role Equipment for the Indian Coast Guard. This acquisition falls under the Buy (Indian) category.

The contract was finalized on 12 February 2026 in New Delhi, witnessed by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. HAL’s Transport Aircraft Division in Kanpur will be responsible for manufacturing the aircraft, highlighting the advancement of indigenous production capabilities in the defence aviation sector.

The addition of the Dornier 228 aircraft aims to significantly boost the Indian Coast Guard’s capabilities in maritime surveillance, search and rescue, pollution monitoring, and coastal security tasks. Known for its versatility and reliability, the aircraft is well-suited for sustained operations across India's extensive maritime areas.

Apart from operational benefits, the program is anticipated to generate considerable employment opportunities, both directly and indirectly. This will strengthen HAL’s production framework and support a broad network of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) along with ancillary industries. It is also expected to foster long-term prospects in Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) activities and technical support throughout the aircrafts' lifecycle.

The agreement is a testament to the government’s commitment to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and the Make in India strategy in defence manufacturing. It simultaneously enhances India’s maritime security infrastructure using platforms that are both indigenously built and supported.
