Defence Ministry Affirms Timely Recognition of Operation Sindoor Soldiers, Dismisses Late Acknowledgment Claims
New Delhi, June 27, 2026: The Ministry of Defence has dismissed reports that the valiant sacrifice of six Indian military personnel during Operation Sindoor was only recently acknowledged. It clarified that these soldiers were honoured by the nation at the earliest possible moment.
On June 27, 2026, a statement titled “Honouring the Bravehearts” was released through the Press Information Bureau. The Ministry refuted claims circulating in some media platforms and on social media that the recognition of the six bravehearts was a recent occurrence.
The Ministry highlighted that the sacrifices of these soldiers were officially acknowledged shortly after Operation Sindoor, and tributes were paid well before the reports that sparked recent controversy.
According to the statement, the Director General of Military Operations at the time paid homage to the fallen soldiers during an official press briefing on May 11, 2025. During this briefing, the senior military officer expressly acknowledged their sacrifice during Operation Sindoor.
This acknowledgment during the official press conference represented an early and public tribute by the Indian Armed Forces to those who laid down their lives. The Ministry stated that this disproved suggestions that their sacrifice had been unrecognised until recently.
The six soldiers were subsequently awarded gallantry awards, officially announced through a press release on August 14, 2025. The Ministry described these awards as formal recognition by the nation of their courage, dedication, and supreme sacrifice in line with the highest traditions of the Indian Defence Forces.
The Indian Army's official social media platforms promptly paid tributes to the fallen personnel, ensuring their service and sacrifice were publicly recognized and honoured.
The recognition of these soldiers continued during subsequent military ceremonies. On October 8, 2025, the Chief of the Air Staff presented gallantry awards to the families of the fallen personnel in a solemn ceremony.
Further recognition occurred during the Army Day Parade in Jaipur on January 15, 2026. During the event, the Chief of the Army Staff awarded the Sena Medal for Gallantry to the families of three soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during Operation Sindoor.
The Ministry stated that these ceremonies reaffirmed the enduring commitment of the Indian Defence Forces to honour those who sacrifice their lives for the nation. Presenting medals to the next of kin ensured that the courage and sacrifice of these soldiers were formally recognized in the presence of their families and the nation.
Addressing questions about the engraving of the soldiers’ names at the National War Memorial, the Ministry clarified that this process follows a well-defined protocol.
The Defence Forces adhere to prescribed procedures with diligence, care, and reverence, given the solemn nature of the honour. The statement rejected allegations that the necessary process had not been followed, describing such claims as factually incorrect.
The National War Memorial in New Delhi honours members of the Indian Armed Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defending the country. Names are added to the memorial only after established administrative and ceremonial procedures are completed.
The Ministry expressed regret over the creation of an unnecessary and unfounded controversy regarding the recognition of the Operation Sindoor bravehearts. It warned that misleading narratives could distort established facts and cause undue distress to the families of fallen soldiers.
The statement noted that such controversies risk detracting from the dignity, gratitude, and reverence owed to military personnel who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
The Ministry urged media organisations, social media users, and other stakeholders to act responsibly and exercise restraint when reporting on matters involving fallen soldiers. It called for verification of information before publication and urged against circulating unverified claims.
Matters concerning military casualties, gallantry awards, and the commemoration of fallen personnel should be handled with sensitivity, as inaccurate reports can deeply affect bereaved families.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment, stating that the Indian Defence Forces remain steadfast in honouring every soldier who has made the ultimate sacrifice for the country.
The six bravehearts of Operation Sindoor, it said, are national heroes whose courage, dedication, and devotion to duty will continue to inspire future generations of Indians.
“Their memory shall always be honoured with the dignity, gratitude, and reverence it deserves,” the Ministry stated, reiterating that the nation had recognized their sacrifice through official tributes, gallantry awards, and solemn military ceremonies.
