Defence Acquisition Council Approves ₹2.38 Lakh Crore in Defence Proposals to Strengthen Military Capability
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved a significant boost in India's military capabilities by granting Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for defence procurement proposals valued at around ₹2.38 lakh crore. This decision aims to enhance the operational strength across all branches of the armed forces.
Key Approvals for Indian Army
The DAC's decision will bolster the Indian Army's combat readiness with several crucial systems. Among them is the Air Defence Tracked System, which will provide real-time control and reporting for air defence, as well as High Capacity Radio Relay systems to ensure secure communications.
Furthermore, the council has sanctioned the acquisition of the Dhanush Gun System, enhancing artillery capabilities with its superior range and accuracy. Additionally, the procurement of Armoured Piercing Tank Ammunition will increase anti-tank firepower, and a new Runway Independent Aerial Surveillance System will improve battlefield monitoring.
Boost to Indian Air Force
For the Indian Air Force, the DAC approved the purchase of Medium Transport Aircraft to replace older models like the AN-32 and IL-76, meeting both strategic and tactical airlift needs.
The council has also given the green light for the acquisition of the S-400 air defence system, which will significantly enhance India's ability to defend against long-range aerial threats on critical assets.
In a move toward advanced warfare technology, the DAC has approved Remotely Piloted Strike Aircraft for offensive operations, coordinated strikes, and stealth intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.
Moreover, the overhaul of Su-30 aero engines and related components has been approved to ensure prolonged aircraft service life and maintain operational readiness.
Indian Coast Guard Capability Expansion
The DAC also approved the acquisition of Heavy Duty Air Cushion Vehicles for the Indian Coast Guard. These vehicles will enhance coastal operations by enabling high-speed patrol, reconnaissance, search and rescue, logistics support, and maritime assistance.
Record Defence Procurement Push
This round of approvals marks a record year for defence acquisitions. In the fiscal year 2025–26, the DAC has given AoN for 55 proposals worth ₹6.73 lakh crore. Additionally, capital procurement contracts for 503 proposals totaling ₹2.28 lakh crore have been signed, both achieving new financial year records.
These decisions highlight India's commitment to modernisation, self-reliance, and increased operational preparedness amid evolving security challenges.
