Cochin Shipyard and Svitzer Partner to Manufacture Electric Tugboats in India

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has entered into a significant collaboration with Denmark's Svitzer to manufacture advanced electric transverse tugboats in India, marking a substantial advancement for India's maritime manufacturing and green shipping aspirations. The companies signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to this effect.

The agreement was finalized during the India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai and represents an important development in Svitzer’s international electrification strategy while enhancing India’s reputation as a center for sustainable shipbuilding.

This partnership will leverage CSL's sophisticated shipbuilding capabilities alongside Svitzer’s extensive 200-year experience in global towage. Together, they aim to create highly energy-efficient and environmentally friendly tugboats for use in Indian ports and Svitzer's global operations.

The collaboration focuses on the TRAnsverse tug model, which is renowned for its superior manoeuvrability, precision, and low emissions, making it especially suited for work in confined port areas. These tugboats are crafted to optimize energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact, supporting India's Green Port and Green Towage goals.

Madhu S. Nair, Chairman and Managing Director of CSL, stated that this partnership would enhance local supply chains, foster domestic expertise, and expedite India's move towards sustainable maritime technologies.

Kasper Nilaus, CEO of Svitzer, emphasized that the collaboration is in harmony with the Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, and it showcases a shared dedication to achieving cleaner and more efficient port operations across the globe.

This alliance represents a strategic move towards reducing carbon emissions in port activities and positions India as a prominent player in the construction of advanced, green maritime vessels.
