CISF Head Constable Dies After AK-47 Accidental Discharge While Cleaning Rifle in Dantewada
Dantewada, September 10, 2026: A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) head constable died at a camp in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district after his service rifle allegedly went off while he was cleaning it, police said on Thursday.
The incident took place around 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday at a portacabin post under the CISF’s Bacheli camp area in the Bailadila hills, where the force is deployed to protect National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) iron ore mining operations in Kirandul and Bacheli.
The deceased was identified as Head Constable Dattatraya, 50, a resident of Ahilyanagar in Maharashtra and son of Shivaji B. Wangne. He was posted at Camp 10-11 A, Porta Cabin No. 3.
According to preliminary information, Dattatraya was cleaning his government-issued AK-47 rifle when it suddenly discharged two rounds. The bullets hit him, causing serious injuries.
Personnel who heard the gunshots rushed to the spot and took him to Apollo Hospital, also referred to as NMDC Apollo Hospital, in Bacheli. He was examined by doctors and declared dead. His body was first kept in the hospital mortuary and later shifted to the District Hospital in Dantewada for post-mortem examination and other legal procedures.
After being informed of the death, family members travelled from Maharashtra to Bacheli. Police Station Bacheli has taken cognisance of the matter, completed inquest proceedings and started an investigation.
Officials said the exact circumstances of the firing will be established only after the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) examines the scene and the weapon, along with the post-mortem report.
Investigators are also looking into all aspects of the case, including whether firearm-handling and weapon-maintenance protocols were followed. Police and CISF authorities have said support is being provided to the family of the deceased.
The Bailadila range, where the CISF unit is stationed, is a major iron ore mining complex operated by NMDC. The case remains under investigation, and further official details are expected after the forensic and medical reports are received.
