CBI nabs Delhi Police Sub-Inspector in Prashant Vihar bribery trap over ₹80,000

New Delhi, October 5: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Sub-Inspector of the Delhi Police posted at Prashant Vihar Police Station after allegedly catching him while he was accepting a bribe of ₹80,000.

According to the agency, the case was registered on October 4 after a complaint alleged that the Sub-Inspector, who was acting as the investigating officer in a criminal case at the same police station, had demanded ₹1 lakh in return for favouring the complainant in the proceedings.

The CBI said the officer later conducted a personal search of the complainant and found ₹20,000 in his pocket, which he allegedly took under duress. He then instructed the complainant to arrange and bring the remaining ₹80,000. A trap was subsequently laid on October 4, and the Sub-Inspector was caught red-handed while allegedly demanding and accepting the balance amount.

The officer has been apprehended and further investigation is underway. The CBI has not disclosed his name in its account of the case.

In a statement, the agency said: “The strict action by the CBI against corrupt public servants underscores its firm commitment to curbing corruption. Citizens who come across instances of corruption or are subjected to demands for bribes by public officials are encouraged to report such matters. They may visit the office of the CBI to lodge their complaints or share relevant information.”

The allegation relates to an investigating officer allegedly seeking an undue advantage from a person whose case he was handling, placing the matter in direct conflict with his official duties. The CBI has not said which legal provisions were invoked, nor has it said whether a charge-sheet has been filed. Those details are expected to emerge as the probe continues.
