Captain Hansja Sharma to Lead Army Aviation Squadron at Republic Day Parade as India’s First Woman Rudra Helicopter Pilot
Captain Hansja Sharma of the Indian Army has added to her list of accomplishments by being chosen to lead the 251 Army Aviation Squadron in the upcoming Republic Day Parade. This achievement marks yet another milestone in her distinguished career, bringing pride to Jammu and Kashmir.
Originating from Jammu, Captain Sharma stands out as the first female pilot in the Indian Army to operate the Rudra armed helicopter, a key combat asset of the Army Aviation Corps. Her journey into the limelight began at the Combat Army Aviation Training School in Nashik, where she ranked first in her class and became the first woman officer to receive the Silver Cheetah Trophy, an accolade for the best combat aviator.
During the Republic Day Parade rehearsals, Captain Sharma demonstrated her leadership by commanding her squadron from a vehicle equipped with the HELINA missile system. This system, launched from the Rudra helicopter, is designed to accurately target and destroy enemy armor and fortified positions, illustrating the Army Aviation Corps' strike capabilities.
A video capturing Captain Sharma's leadership during these rehearsals has gained widespread attention, drawing praise for her poise and the significance of her role in one of India's most esteemed national events.
The path to Captain Sharma's current position has been marked by determination and resilience. Residing in Rehari Colony, Jammu, she faced and overcame several obstacles, including medical examination challenges related to eyesight and weight, on her way to commissioning. Her disciplined approach and dedication enabled her to realize her dream of becoming an Army officer, with her NCC training playing a crucial role in developing her military and leadership skills.
Rashmi Sharma, Captain Sharma's mother, expressed deep pride in her daughter's accomplishments, viewing her leadership role in the Republic Day Parade as a significant honor for both the family and the region. She attributed her daughter's success to years of hard work, sacrifice, and unyielding determination.
Captain Hansja Sharma, having won the Silver Cheetah Trophy, flown the Rudra helicopter, and now leading a squadron at the Republic Day Parade, stands as a testament to Naari Shakti and the Indian Army's commitment to gender-neutral roles based on merit and capability.
Her achievements underscore the increasing presence of women in frontline combat aviation and serve as an inspiration for many young aspirants across the nation, particularly women who aspire to join high-skill military roles.
As Captain Sharma commands her squadron on Kartavya Path this Republic Day, she embodies the Indian Army's evolving principles of confidence, inclusivity, and excellence in national service.
