Captain Deepak Singh: The Courageous 48 Rashtriya Rifles Officer Awarded Shaurya Chakra Posthumously

Born in 1999 in Almora district, Uttarakhand, Captain Singh was raised in a disciplined environment. His father, Mahesh Singh, was a police officer, and his mother, Champa Singh, instilled strong family values. Growing up with his sisters Manisha and Jyoti, he was encouraged to serve the nation, a value deeply respected in their household.
From an early age, Singh excelled in academics and sports, particularly hockey, which nurtured his resilience and teamwork. Inspired by military traditions, he aspired to join the Indian Army, achieving this through the Technical Entry Scheme (TES-35). After rigorous training at the Officers Training Academy in Gaya, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Corps of Signals in June 2020.
After serving with his parent unit, Captain Singh was assigned to the 48 Rashtriya Rifles, engaged in counter-insurgency efforts in Jammu and Kashmir. Known for his calm demeanor and tactical acumen, he quickly became a trusted and courageous leader among his peers.
On August 13, 2024, acting on intelligence about terrorist presence in Doda's Shivgarh-Assar forest, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police. Captain Singh led two teams from the 48 Rashtriya Rifles into a challenging terrain marked by dense vegetation and rugged landscapes.
Displaying tactical skill, he positioned his team to monitor area movements. At around 7:30 PM, noticing suspicious activity, he swiftly engaged the terrorists. Despite darkness and difficult terrain, he maintained pressure and surveillance throughout the night.
At dawn on August 14, 2024, Captain Singh reorganized his team for a systematic search, recovering an M4 assault rifle, ammunition, and grenades, indicating heavily armed militants' presence. The situation escalated when a hidden injured terrorist opened fire on the troops.
In a defining moment, Captain Singh selflessly pushed his comrade to safety, fully exposing himself to enemy fire and sustaining multiple injuries. Heroically, he advanced toward the terrorist, engaging him with precise fire, neutralizing the threat and ensuring his team's safety.
Captain Singh succumbed to his injuries on August 14, 2024, embodying the Indian Army's finest traditions. His leadership and commitment to his men were a testament to soldiering's essence—valuing others' lives above one's own.
For his gallantry, the Government of India announced the award of the Shaurya Chakra on Republic Day 2025. His parents received the medal on May 23, 2025, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. National leaders, including Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, hailed him as a proud son of the state.
Captain Singh is survived by his parents and two sisters. His life story continues to inspire young Indians, especially those pursuing a military career. His actions are a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifices made by soldiers in challenging environments.
