BSF Patrol in West Bengal Confronts Bangladeshi Smugglers, One Killed

A clash on the India-Bangladesh border near the Halderpara outpost in West Bengal's Nadia district resulted in the death of a Bangladeshi smuggler and injuries to a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel. The incident unfolded when BSF troops were attacked while on patrol.

The confrontation took place at approximately 12:10 pm on July 2, following specific intelligence about a gold smuggling operation along the riverine border. BSF personnel set an ambush and observed a group of four to five smugglers crossing from Bangladesh into India. The intruders ignored multiple warnings and continued to advance.

According to BSF reports, initial attempts to deter the smugglers involved firing a warning shot into the air. Nevertheless, the smugglers encircled a BSF jawan and attacked him with sharp weapons. In defense, another BSF member fired at the attackers, hitting one in the abdomen. The injured smuggler collapsed, while the rest retreated across the border.

The smuggler who was shot was transported to Krishnaganj Hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. The injured BSF trooper is receiving medical treatment at the same hospital. At the scene, authorities recovered four sharp weapons and a cutter, indicating a planned assault.

A first information report has been filed with local police, and the deceased smuggler's body has been transferred to police custody. This incident underscores the ongoing risks that security forces encounter while monitoring the often volatile and porous sections of the India-Bangladesh border.
