BSF Jawan Shivam Dies in Road Accident in Unnao a Day After Returning Home on Leave
Unnao: A Border Security Force jawan who had returned to his village on leave just a day earlier was killed in a road accident on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway service lane in Unnao on Tuesday evening. Thirty-year-old Shivam, posted in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, died on the spot after his motorcycle collided with an auto-rickshaw near a toll plaza. He was cremated on Wednesday with military honours and a guard of honour.
Shivam, son of Rampal and a resident of Chandauli Khurd village in Hasanganj area, had reached home on Monday, reportedly to spend time with his family around Raksha Bandhan and to be with his ailing mother, Madhuri. What was meant to be a short family reunion ended in tragedy within 24 hours of his arrival.
According to the account available, Shivam was riding towards Materia crossing around 7 pm on Tuesday with his colleague Rajendra Rawat when the motorcycle hit an auto coming from the Lucknow side on the service lane near the toll plaza. The collision was severe enough to throw Shivam off the vehicle. He died at the scene, while Rawat sustained minor injuries.
Police, led by Kotwal Sharad Kumar, reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it for postmortem. The incident has been registered as a road accident, and the circumstances of the collision are being investigated.
The news left Shivam’s family shattered. His mother Madhuri and wife Gudiya were inconsolable after the death of the BSF jawan, who is also survived by three married sisters — Shilpi, Jyoti and Nigam. Relatives said the family had been looking forward to a few days with him after his posting in Kashmir, but instead the village was plunged into mourning almost immediately after his return.
After the postmortem on Wednesday, Shivam’s body was brought back to Chandauli Khurd, where a large number of villagers and public representatives gathered for the funeral procession. BSF personnel paid ceremonial respects and rendered a guard of honour before the cremation. Mohan MLA Brijesh Rawat attended the last rites, laid floral tributes, helped shoulder the bier and met the grieving family. He described the death of the serving jawan as “tragic” and prayed for the peace of the departed soul and strength for the family.
The accident again highlights the risks faced by security personnel returning home from demanding border duty. While such deaths are not combat casualties, they can be just as devastating for families and units, particularly when they occur suddenly on busy roads near expressway service lanes and toll plazas where mixed traffic can create dangerous conditions, especially at dusk.
Local reports did not immediately state whether the auto driver had been identified or booked, or whether the Border Security Force had announced any formal condolences or compensation. Those details are expected to emerge after the police complete the postmortem and initial investigation.
For Shivam’s family, however, the immediate reality is far more painful: a homecoming that was supposed to be brief and hopeful ended instead with a military funeral, a village in mourning, and the loss of a son who had only just come back through the door.
