BSF Jawan Arrested in Punjab for Wife’s Alleged Murder, Family Claims Cover-Up Attempt
A Border Security Force jawan has been arrested in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district in connection with the alleged murder of his wife, after he reportedly told relatives that she had died in a fall from the roof of their house. Police said the case was registered after the woman’s family accused him of prolonged harassment, repeated assault and trying to pass off the death as an accident.
The accused has been identified as Amarjit Singh, also spelled Amarjeet in some reports, a resident of Shekhamatta village near Hajipur in Hoshiarpur. His wife, Rama, died in the intervening night of 13 and 14 August 2026. The couple had been married for around 12 years and had two children, a son and a daughter.
How the incident unfolded
According to the complaint filed by Rama’s family and the police account, Amarjit Singh was home on leave when the alleged assault took place. On the night of 13 August, he is accused of beating Rama at their residence. Around 4 a.m. on 14 August, he reportedly informed the family that she had fallen from the roof and suffered serious injuries. In one account, he called Rama’s uncle Malkeet Singh to convey the news.
Rama was taken to the Civil Hospital in Hajipur, also referred to in some reports as the Government Hospital. Ram Chand, her father, along with other relatives, rushed there after receiving the information. They found her dead on arrival.
Family members said they noticed multiple injury marks on her head and body, which led them to suspect that she had been assaulted rather than injured in a fall. They alleged that the roof-fall explanation was a cover story designed to hide the real circumstances of her death.
Allegations of years of abuse
The FIR was registered on the basis of Ram Chand’s complaint, in which he alleged that his daughter had been subjected to harassment and physical violence by her husband throughout the marriage. One of the specific allegations was that Rama was pressured to bring her share of her parental property. Relatives also claimed she had been assaulted on several occasions over the years.
The family further alleged that Amarjit had beaten Rama again about three to four months before her death, and that the matter had then been resolved through a compromise between the two families. They said the latest assault was part of the same pattern of abuse and ended in her death.
Police have also named Amarjit’s uncle Kuldeep, also known as Kuki, and aunt Sonia in the case. According to the family, they were involved either in instigating the assault or in the subsequent attempt to conceal what happened. Both are currently absconding.
Police case and investigation
Hajipur Police Station registered a murder case after receiving the complaint. Station House Officer Inspector Harprem Singh, also referred to as Harpreet Singh in some reports, confirmed that Amarjit Singh has been arrested and said the investigation is continuing.
A post-mortem examination was conducted before the body was handed over to the family for the last rites, which were to be performed in Rama’s native village. Police said they are examining evidence, recording statements and trying to establish the exact sequence of events, including the roles of the two other accused named in the case.
Reports from NDTV, The Times of India, News18 and The Tribune identify the accused as a BSF jawan. An earlier India Today report had described him as an Army jawan, but later coverage from multiple outlets consistently identified him as a member of the Border Security Force. The location of the incident is consistently reported as the Hoshiarpur area near Hajipur, where the woman was taken for treatment and declared dead.
So far, authorities have not issued any further official statement on motive beyond the family’s allegations of long-term harassment linked to property demands and repeated violence. The case remains under investigation, with the main accused in custody and two others still at large.
