BSF ASI Detained After Allegedly Shooting Cousin During Ahmedabad Property Dispute

Ahmedabad: A Border Security Force Assistant Sub-Inspector was detained on Sunday after he allegedly opened fire during a family meeting over a long-running property dispute, injuring his cousin in the thigh, police said.

The incident took place around 1 p.m. near Takshshila Cross Road in the Vastral–Ramol area, where members of the Prajapati family had gathered to try to settle an argument over an old ancestral house. What began as a reconciliation meeting reportedly turned into a heated exchange before the shooting.

Police identified the accused as 46-year-old Pramod Ram Prasad Shiv Dayal Prajapati, who serves as an Assistant Sub-Inspector in the BSF. According to the police, he allegedly drew a licensed firearm and fired after the discussion escalated. Some reports said two rounds were discharged, from either a licensed pistol or a 12-bore firearm.

The bullet struck 54-year-old Rajeshbhai Harishankarbhai Prajapati, a retired Army personnel and the accused’s cousin, in the thigh. He was taken to hospital in an ambulance. Police and hospital sources said his condition was not critical and that he was undergoing treatment. No other injuries were reported.

Ramol police said the meeting had brought together three brothers — Pramod, Pawan and Ashish Prajapati — along with other relatives, including cousins and members of Ashish’s in-laws’ family, in an effort to resolve the dispute. Both Pramod and Pawan are serving in the BSF. The property disagreement had reportedly been continuing for several months.

The sound of gunfire created panic in the locality, prompting a swift police response. Senior officers, including Sector-2 Joint Commissioner of Police Jaipalsinh Rathod, and personnel from Ramol police station reached the scene. Police detained Pramod Prajapati and seized the weapon allegedly used in the firing. Others present at the meeting were also taken in for questioning.

Ramol police inspector V.D. Mori confirmed that the accused and the firearm were in custody and that Rajesh Prajapati had been shifted to hospital after being hit in the thigh. A case has been registered and police have started an investigation into how the family meeting descended into violence. Legal proceedings were under way at the time of the latest reports.

Police said the matter remains under investigation and that they are examining witness statements and the sequence of events that led to the shooting.
