Brigadier Sanjay Kumar Mishra Becomes First Armed Forces Ophthalmologist to Receive FRCOphth Fellowship

The Directorate General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) has congratulated Brigadier Sanjay Kumar Mishra, an ophthalmologist at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi, after he was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) by election by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London.

The fellowship was conferred at a ceremony in London and is being seen within the Armed Forces Medical Services as an important professional distinction. According to the DGAFMS, Brig Mishra is the only Indian to receive the honour this year and the first ophthalmologist from the Armed Forces Medical Services to be awarded FRCOphth.

According to the DGAFMS, only two ophthalmologists received the FRCS Ed by-election distinction that year, and both were Indians. Taken together, the two fellowships represent a rare level of recognition from leading British Royal Colleges and add further distinction to Brig Mishra’s medical career.

The two awards also reflect the international standing of ophthalmology as a speciality that depends on precision, extensive clinical knowledge and continual engagement with medical advances. The FRCOphth recognition came from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London, while the FRCS Ed was conferred by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
