BEL Secures ₹1,640 Crore Contract to Equip Indian Army with Advanced Air Defence Radars

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has inked a ₹1,640 crore deal with the Ministry of Defence for the provision of advanced Air Defence Fire Control Radars to the Indian Army. This contract represents a pivotal move in the Army's efforts to upgrade its air defence capabilities.
The radars, crafted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and set to be manufactured by BEL, are designed for functions including surveillance, detection, acquisition, and tracking of aerial threats. They will also assist in guiding air defence weaponry to effectively neutralize threats such as fighter jets, attack helicopters, and drones, according to BEL's BSE filing.
According to the Ministry of Defence, these radars will comprise at least 70 percent indigenous materials. They feature a modular design, are operable in all weather conditions, and are equipped with electronic countermeasure and counter-countermeasure capabilities, allowing for deployment at any time of day or night.
An official statement from the Ministry highlighted that these radars will considerably enhance the Indian Army's operational readiness and support the government's objective of attaining self-reliance in defence.
This contract follows BEL's announcement of securing additional orders amounting to ₹563 crore for various defence technologies, including navigation systems, satcom interception systems, active antenna arrays, jammers, seekers, and communication equipment.
