Army Chief Engages New Command Subedar Majors to Enhance Troop Welfare and Leadership

General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Army Staff, participated in a significant meeting with newly appointed Command Subedar Majors at the Directorate General of Military Operations earlier this week. The discussion centered on improving troop welfare, enhancing unit cohesion, and fostering strong leadership at the foundational level.

The role of the Command Subedar Major is crucial as they act as a vital link between officers and soldiers. During the meeting, General Dwivedi emphasized the necessity of shared accountability and leadership at the frontline to build a resilient fighting force. He encouraged the Subedar Majors to be proactive in mentoring troops, ensuring their well-being, and sustaining operational morale, particularly in light of insights gained from recent conflicts.

Since assuming the position of Army Chief on June 30, 2024, General Dwivedi has been an advocate for modernization and self-sufficiency. Under his command, the Army has pushed forward its Atmanirbhar Bharat objectives, allocating 75% of the 2024 defense capital budget for domestic procurement, an increase from 68% in the 2022-23 period. As the former Northern Army Commander, he played a significant role in enhancing capabilities through the use of indigenous technologies.

The Indian Army’s Welfare Directorate continues to support these efforts with specific welfare programs and CSR partnerships, highlighting the Army’s dedication to providing comprehensive support for its personnel.

This engagement with Command Subedar Majors represents another step in the Army’s continuous endeavor to ensure preparedness, resilience, and a soldier-centric approach amidst evolving operational demands.
