Wing Commander Pooja Thakur (Retired) is a highly regarded former officer of the Indian Air Force (IAF) who gained both national and international acclaim as the first woman to lead the prestigious Tri-Services Guard of Honour. Her leadership was on display during the ceremonial welcome of Barack Obama at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 25, 2015, marking a pivotal moment in the history of India’s armed forces by advancing gender inclusivity within military ranks.

Born in 1979 in Ajmer, Rajasthan, Pooja Thakur was raised in a military environment. Her father served as a Colonel in the Indian Army, which significantly influenced her upbringing. Moving frequently due to her father's postings, she developed key traits such as resilience and adaptability early on, attributes that later became integral to her character as an officer.

In addition to her military career, Thakur pursued higher education with dedication. She obtained a Bachelor of Science from Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar, followed by a Master’s degree in English from the same institution. Furthering her academic credentials, she acquired an MBA in Personnel Management from Symbiosis, enhancing her proficiency in administrative and human resource management.

Her educational journey included a Certificate in Media Communication from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Delhi, and attending management courses at the Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon. This comprehensive blend of academic and military experience made her a versatile officer capable of managing a variety of tasks.

Thakur commenced her career in the Indian Air Force in 2000, receiving her commission on June 16, 2001, in the Administrative Branch under the Short Service Commission. Her tenure included roles in personnel management, procurement, media relations, and public relations at Air Headquarters.

Her career, which spanned over 15 years, saw her rise to the rank of Wing Commander in 2014. Known for her professionalism and leadership, she adeptly managed complex administrative duties within the Air Force.

A significant milestone in her career occurred on January 25, 2015, when she led the Tri-Services Guard of Honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan for the ceremonial reception of US President Barack Obama.

Commanding a unit that included members from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, Thakur conducted the ceremonial duties with meticulous precision and assuredness. She gave commands during the national anthems and the 21-gun salute, and accompanied the dignitary during the inspection of the guard.

This event was notably aligned with the “Nari Shakti” theme of India’s Republic Day celebrations, underscoring the expanding roles of women in the armed forces. Her leadership not only broke conventional boundaries but also projected a powerful message of equality and competence.

An adventurer at heart, she was part of the IAF Women Skydiving Team. Beginning her skydiving pursuits in 1999, she became the first woman officer to skydive from a microlight aircraft in 2001. Her adventurous spirit also led her to activities like deep-sea diving, rafting, skiing, and paragliding.

Thakur, like many Short Service Commission officers, faced challenges related to the grant of Permanent Commission. In 2016, after being denied this opportunity, she sought legal recourse from the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT).

In 2017, the tribunal ruled in her favor, mandating her reinstatement and consideration for Permanent Commission without bias. This case also reached the Supreme Court, which upheld the rights of women officers in the military, contributing to broader reforms in policies regarding women in uniform.

Following her retirement from the Indian Air Force, Wing Commander Pooja Thakur embraced a new role as a motivational speaker and corporate trainer. Drawing on her military background, she delivers talks on leadership, resilience, women's empowerment, and personal development.

She has been a prominent speaker at events like TEDx, discussing themes such as overcoming personal limits and adapting to change. Her engagements continue to inspire students, professionals, and organizations to strive for excellence and challenge barriers.
