Vice Admiral V Srinivas Conducts Strategic Review at INS Parundu Naval Air Station

Vice Admiral V Srinivas, distinguished with PVSM, AVSM, NM honors and serving as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command, visited INS Parundu on July 17, 2025, for a strategic review. This naval air station, situated near Uchipuli in Ramanathapuram district, is pivotal for the Indian Navy in monitoring the South East Bay of Bengal, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Palk Strait.

During his visit, Vice Admiral Srinivas assessed the operational readiness of the station, its infrastructure, and its expanding role in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) reconnaissance. Since its commissioning in 2009, INS Parundu has evolved from the former Ramnad Civil Aerodrome, gaining significance in the 1980s amid the Sri Lankan Civil War. It currently supports various platforms, including IAI Heron and Searcher Mk II drones, alongside legacy HAL Chetak helicopters.

During his interaction with the naval personnel, the Flag Officer commended their efforts in enhancing coastal security and intelligence in this strategically vital area. His visit further emphasized the Southern Naval Command's role as the primary training command of the Indian Navy, overseeing over 20 top training facilities nationwide.

INS Parundu continues to operate HAL Chetak helicopters, which were integrated into the Indian Navy in the 1960s, showcasing a balance between traditional assets and modern advancements like the Kamov Ka-31, which enhance maritime situational awareness.

There are also plans to open INS Parundu for civilian operations as part of the government's Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), highlighting its growing significance not only in defense but also in regional development.

The Admiral's visit highlights the Indian Navy's focus on strengthening surveillance capabilities along India's southeastern coast and ensuring readiness in areas crucial to national security.
