US Marines Repel Attack on US Consulate in Karachi Amid Regional Turmoil
Heightening regional tensions, United States Marines at the US Consulate General in Karachi have reportedly engaged and neutralized militants attempting to breach the premises. This incident, marked by multiple casualties, occurred amid widespread protests in Pakistan following the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in coordinated strikes by the US and Israel.
Initially peaceful, the protests quickly escalated into violence in several cities, with Karachi experiencing some of the most severe clashes. Eyewitness accounts and local authorities describe how hundreds of demonstrators, chanting anti-US and anti-Israel slogans, gathered outside the consulate. The group, reportedly including armed militants, smashed windows, set a nearby police post ablaze, and hurled stones and other projectiles at security personnel. The assailants allegedly used boards, metal tools, and possibly more lethal weapons in their attempt to penetrate the compound's defenses.
US security forces, including Marines tasked with embassy and consulate protection, responded to the attempted breach with defensive fire. Social media platform X and various media outlets report that Marines opened fire on the intruders, killing at least six individuals identified as militants or rioters. Some estimates suggest the death toll among the attackers might be as high as nine, with additional injuries. Pakistani police and paramilitary forces also helped disperse the crowd, using tear gas and batons, contributing to the overall casualties.
Karachi hospital officials reported receiving at least six bodies and numerous wounded, some critically. The estimated fatalities in the city reached 10, with around 50 injuries, although these figures vary due to the chaotic events. Nationwide, broader clashes, including in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region where protesters targeted United Nations offices, increased the death toll to at least 22, with over 120 injured.
The attack on the Karachi consulate appears to be organized by Shia groups sympathetic to Iran, angered by Khamenei's death and Iran's retaliatory missile strikes resulting in three US service members' deaths. Social media footage shows crowds nearing the consulate under clear skies, with individuals running amid apparent disorder near the consulate's barriers, marked by the American flag. The videos display protesters close to the compound, some involved in confrontational actions, though direct gunfire is not visible in the frames.
Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari expressed sorrow over Khamenei's death, extended condolences to Iran, and emphasized Pakistan's solidarity with Iran, urging restraint. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi appealed for calm, acknowledging shared grief but emphasizing peaceful expression and warning against further violence. Sindh provincial authorities, encompassing Karachi, echoed these sentiments and deployed additional troops to restore order.
The US Embassy in Islamabad issued an advisory as it monitored demonstrations at its facilities nationwide, including consulates in Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar, as well as the embassy itself. US citizens were advised to avoid large gatherings and stay informed through local media. No injuries to US personnel were reported in the Karachi incident, and the consulate was secured following the clashes.
This event highlights the volatile geopolitical tensions in the region, exacerbated by ongoing conflicts involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Pakistan, maintaining diplomatic ties with all parties, has historically navigated such crises cautiously, but the protests underscore domestic pressures from religious and political factions. Authorities indicate that security measures at diplomatic sites will remain heightened in the coming days to prevent recurrence.
Investigations into the militants' identities and the organization behind the assault are ongoing, with potential links to broader insurgent networks under scrutiny. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, anticipating further protests in response to the escalating Middle East crisis.
