Trump Imposes 25% Tariff on Indian Exports Citing Trade Barriers and Russia Relations

United States President Donald Trump has declared a 25 percent tariff on all Indian exports to the United States, effective August 1, in addition to an unspecified penalty. The announcement was made through a brief post on Truth Social, where Trump criticized India's trade practices and its defense relations with Russia.

Despite referring to India as a "friend," Trump highlighted that the nation imposes "far too high tariffs" and enforces "the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers" compared to any other country. He also noted India's significant purchases of military equipment and oil from Russia.

Trump remarked, “India will, therefore, be paying a tariff of 25 percent, plus a penalty… starting August 1,” explaining the decision by associating India's acquisitions of Russian energy and arms with the ongoing war in Ukraine.

He also accused India and China of indirectly supporting Russia's military activities through trade and reiterated his claim that he could resolve the conflict “within 24 hours” if re-elected in January.

This decision regarding tariffs follows earlier warnings issued in April, when the US named India among several nations facing reciprocal trade measures. At that time, the tariff increase was postponed to allow for additional discussions.

The announcement comes as New Delhi and Washington are attempting to finalize a long-delayed trade agreement. Earlier this week, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer indicated that more time was necessary to evaluate India's willingness to provide market access for American exports.

The Indian government has not yet released an official response.
