Trump Enacts 25% Tariff on Indian Imports Due to Russian Oil Trade

US President Donald Trump has enacted an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on imports from India, citing the country's ongoing purchase of oil from Russia. This decision represents a significant escalation in trade tensions between the United States and India.

The order states that the US government has determined India is "currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil." Consequently, all products imported from India into the US customs territory will incur an added ad valorem duty of 25%.

The new tariff will be implemented 21 days after the order's signing, affecting goods entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouses for consumption starting at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time. There are two exemptions: goods already loaded onto a vessel and in transit before the effective date, and those entered for consumption prior to 12:01 a.m. EDT on September 17, 2025.

Signed under Trump's executive authority, the order does not detail the duration of these tariffs or the conditions required for their removal. This move is part of broader US initiatives to pressure countries to sever economic ties with Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

This latest measure is anticipated to have considerable repercussions for US–India trade, which encompasses a range of sectors including pharmaceuticals, textiles, and information technology services. It may also lead to further diplomatic negotiations in the near future.
