Trump Announces 10% Tariff for Nations Backing BRICS' 'Anti-American' Stance
On Sunday, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that countries aligning with what he described as the "Anti-American policies" of the BRICS group would face an additional 10% tariff. This declaration was made via a post on Trump's social media platform, Truth Social.
"Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Trump stated.
The announcement comes as international interest in the BRICS bloc continues to grow. Initially established in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, the group was later joined by South Africa. In 2024, the bloc further expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, highlighting its increasing geopolitical importance.
Trump did not define what specific actions or policies would be deemed "anti-American" within this new tariff framework. The lack of clarity has raised questions from economists and international observers, emphasizing the need for further details to aid global trade partners.
This move is widely interpreted as a reflection of Washington's tougher approach to counter BRICS' expanding influence and its initiatives to alter global trade and political dynamics.
