Tragic Independence Day in Karachi: Aerial Firing Claims Three Lives, Injures Dozens

At least three individuals, including an eight-year-old girl and an elderly person, lost their lives, and 64 others sustained injuries in Karachi as celebratory aerial firing disrupted Pakistan's Independence Day celebrations.
Geo News reported that the young girl was hit by a stray bullet in Azizabad, and a man named Stephen was killed in Korangi. Authorities have denounced the shootings as "reckless and dangerous" and have promised to take stringent measures against those involved.
Police indicated that the shootings occurred in various parts of the city during the late-night festivities. An investigation has been launched, and officers are urging the public to commemorate the occasion using safer methods.
A History of Deadly Celebrations in Karachi
Aerial firing remains a persistent problem in Karachi, with 42 people, including five women, killed in January 2025 alone, and over 230 injured. These fatalities are frequently attributed to stray bullets, robbery attempts, and violent altercations.
Pakistan observes Independence Day every August 14 with fireworks, parades, and public events. However, officials have cautioned that this year's festivities were marred by preventable violence.
