Tejas Mk2 Maiden Flight Scheduled for Early 2026, Confirms DRDO Chief
In a recent interview with Tarmak Media House, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, who serves as the Secretary of Defence Research & Development and the Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), revealed that the inaugural flight of the Tejas Mk2 is anticipated for the first quarter of 2026. This announcement aligns with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Chairman and Managing Director Dr. D.K. Sunil's statement that the aircraft is slated to roll out by March 2026.
The Tejas Mk2 is set to be a significant enhancement over its predecessors, the Tejas Mk1 and Mk1A. It will be powered by the robust General Electric F414 engine and will feature substantial upgrades such as improved avionics, the indigenous Uttam AESA radar, and sophisticated electronic warfare systems. These developments aim to elevate the aircraft's operational efficiency and survivability in contemporary combat scenarios.
Designed as a medium-weight multi-role fighter, the Tejas Mk2 seeks to fill the gap between lighter and heavier fighter aircraft. Its rollout in March 2026 will signify the end of assembly and ground testing, paving the way for its first flight shortly thereafter.
Dr. Kamat highlighted the stringent testing and validation processes the aircraft is undergoing to meet high performance and safety standards. Once operational, the Tejas Mk2 is projected to play a pivotal role in modernizing the Indian Air Force, gradually replacing older aircraft models like the MiG-21.
With an expected order of 240 units, the Tejas Mk2 program is poised to become a cornerstone of India's defense strategy. It not only aims to enhance the combat capabilities of the Indian Air Force but also supports the nation's objectives of technological self-reliance and industrial growth through indigenous innovation.
