Sukhoi Su-30MKI Jet Disappears Over Assam; Search and Rescue Underway
A Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet from the Indian Air Force (IAF) has gone missing during a routine mission over the Karbi Anglong region in Assam. The aircraft lost radar contact earlier this evening, leading to the initiation of search and rescue efforts to locate both the jet and its crew.
Preliminary reports indicate that the twin-seat fighter jet vanished from radar while it was operating over the hilly terrain of Karbi Anglong district. Residents in the vicinity reported hearing a loud explosion at around 7:00 PM IST, and smoke was seen rising from the hills, raising concerns among local communities. There are unverified claims that the aircraft may have crashed, with at least one pilot reportedly missing, although official confirmation regarding the crew's status is still awaited.
The Defence Public Relations Officer in Guwahati has verified that specialized teams have been dispatched to the area to gather information and assist in recovery operations. While the IAF has not disclosed specific details about the time of departure or the originating base, sources suggest the aircraft took off from a facility in Assam.
This incident brings to mind previous occurrences involving Su-30MKI aircraft in the region, such as the 2017 disappearance of a similar jet near Tezpur, which was found after an extensive search. Authorities stress that the current incident is unrelated and is being thoroughly investigated.
The IAF has promised to release further updates as the search operation continues. The rugged terrain and weather conditions in Karbi Anglong present challenges, but all available resources are being employed to achieve a swift resolution. This situation is ongoing, and more official information is expected soon.
