Sri Lanka Seizes Iranian Naval Ship Following US Attack on Iranian Frigate

Sri Lanka has assumed control of the Iranian naval vessel, IRINS Bushehr, following the sinking of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena by a US submarine. The attack, which occurred in nearby waters, resulted in the death of at least 87 sailors and has further intensified tensions in the Indian Ocean.

Vessel Requests Emergency Docking

The IRINS Bushehr sought emergency docking at a Sri Lankan port on Wednesday due to engine failure while in proximity to the island. After hours of discussion, Sri Lankan authorities granted permission for the vessel to dock at the port of Trincomalee, citing humanitarian reasons.

A total of 208 crew members, comprising 53 officers, 84 cadet officers, 48 senior sailors, and 23 sailors, were evacuated. Arrangements were made for their transport to Colombo.

Sri Lanka Emphasises Neutrality

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the decision to allow the docking was based on humanitarian principles and international maritime laws.

The president emphasized Sri Lanka's neutral stance, declaring, “Our position has been to safeguard our neutrality while demonstrating our humanitarian values,” and clarified that Sri Lanka would not align with either side in the ongoing US-Israel military actions against Iran.

Officials indicated that docking at Trincomalee, rather than Colombo, prevented potential disruptions to the main commercial shipping hub of the country.

Aftermath of IRIS Dena Sinking

This move comes in the wake of the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena by a US submarine some 44 nautical miles from Sri Lanka’s southern coast. The frigate, with a crew of approximately 180, had recently engaged in a multinational naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal.

Sri Lankan naval teams are actively conducting search operations for missing sailors, while 32 survivors from the IRIS Dena are receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Galle.

Growing Regional Tensions

The incident signifies a noteworthy escalation in the ongoing Middle East conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, which has now extended into the Indian Ocean region.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denounced the incident as an “atrocity at sea,” whereas US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth called it a display of American naval strength.

Strategic Position of Sri Lanka

Since its independence in 1948, Sri Lanka has traditionally adhered to a policy of non-alignment, maintaining both economic and diplomatic relationships with Iran and the United States.

Iran has been a major supplier of crude oil to Sri Lanka, while the United States stands as the largest importer of Sri Lankan garments, placing Colombo in a sensitive position amid rising regional tensions.
