Southern Command Seminar Explores Additive Manufacturing for Combat Equipment Sustainability in Pune

The Southern Command of the Indian Army successfully hosted a seminar focused on additive manufacturing, specifically for maintaining combat-critical equipment. The event was held at the Regional Signal and Mechanical Engineers Institute (RSAMI) in Pune on Wednesday. It gathered policymakers, industry leaders, academics, and veterans from the Armed Forces to discuss the advancing role of manufacturing technologies in the defense sector.

In his keynote address, Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, AVSM, who serves as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command, emphasized the necessity of embracing modern manufacturing methods. He noted these advancements are crucial for ensuring the durability and reliability of vital combat equipment over the long term.

Lieutenant General JS Sidana, AVSM, Director General and Senior Colonel Commandant of the Corps of EME, shared his expertise on introducing additive manufacturing into the Indian Army. He highlighted the significant impact this approach could have on improving operational readiness.

The seminar included dynamic panel discussions that examined ways to accelerate the integration of additive manufacturing within the defense industry. Participants pointed out its potential to lessen reliance on imported goods, expedite repair and maintenance processes, and boost mission preparedness.

Officials indicated that the seminar functioned as a crucial collaborative forum, aligning military needs with the capabilities of industry and academic research. It also supported the national initiative of Atmanirbhar Bharat, promoting self-reliance in India.
