Shivangi Singh, India's First Rafale Woman Pilot, Now Training Future Aviators on Hawk Jets

In a notable advancement underscoring the evolving roles of women within the Indian Air Force, Squadron Leader Shivangi Singh, celebrated as India's first female pilot capable of flying the Rafale fighter jet, has been assigned to a training institution. There, she will be responsible for instructing future aviators on the BAE Hawk advanced jet trainer.

This new position represents a significant shift in Squadron Leader Singh's illustrious career, moving from her operational duties in a Rafale squadron to training the upcoming cadre of IAF fighter pilots. This appointment comes after her successful completion of the demanding Flying Instructors Course at the Flying Instructors School in Tambaram, a rigorous program in military aviation.

Commissioned in 2017 as part of the second cohort of female fighter pilots, Singh, hailing from Varanasi, initially flew the MiG-21 Bison before she was qualified on the Rafale in 2020. She was stationed with the Rafale squadron in Ambala, where she engaged in intense missions and participated in international exercises. In a notable appearance, she was photographed with President Droupadi Murmu during the President's flight in a Rafale earlier this year.

The Hawk advanced jet trainer plays a crucial role in the IAF's pilot training framework, grooming aviators for eventual transition to frontline fighters like the Rafale.
