Sarang Team Enhances Aerobatic Display with Five-Helicopter Formation for NDA Parade
The Indian Air Force's Sarang Helicopter Display Team is poised to unveil enhanced aerobatic manoeuvres featuring five helicopters, as opposed to its traditional four-helicopter formation, during the Passing Out Parade of the 150th course at the National Defence Academy in Pune.
This aerial performance, set against the backdrop of the Sudan Block and Salaria Square, coincides with the graduation of the third cohort of women cadets from the NDA.
According to officials, the new five-helicopter formation increases the complexity, coordination, and precision necessary for executing the team’s renowned manoeuvres, such as the diamond formation, crossover, and the celebrated “Sarang Split.”
The Sarang team, often seen as the Indian Air Force’s ambassadors, has gained international acclaim with over 1,200 displays at more than 390 locations both domestically and internationally.
Squadron Leader Nishank Awasthi, speaking before the event, shared that the team originated as an Advanced Light Helicopter evaluation flight in 2003, before being renamed Sarang in 2004. He explained that "Sarang," a Sanskrit term, embodies the grace and elegance similar to that of a peacock, capturing the essence of the team's performances.
Squadron Leader Ajeet Singh noted that new five-helicopter manoeuvres have been incorporated into the display over recent months, including a more expansive diamond formation and an upgraded crossover move that demands precise flying techniques.
Additionally, he mentioned that the well-loved “Sarang Heart” manoeuvre and the final “Sarang Split” will now also be presented with the five-helicopter setup.
Squadron Leader Nidarshana Sharma elaborated on the rigorous process pilots undergo for selection and training, which includes flying evaluations, written tests, mission recordings, and comprehensive debriefing sessions to ensure top-tier safety and performance standards.
The team operates the HAL Dhruv, an Advanced Light Helicopter developed indigenously by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. This all-weather, multi-mission helicopter exemplifies India's advancing aerospace capabilities and the "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" vision.
Officials highlighted that the upgraded Sarang display not only exemplifies exceptional piloting and operational precision but also underscores India’s indigenous aviation achievements both nationally and internationally.
