Russian Navy Deputy Chief Mikhail Gudkov Killed in Ukrainian Missile Strike on Command Post

Major General Mikhail Gudkov, who served as the Deputy Chief of the Russian Navy and was a notable brigade commander, has been killed in a missile strike by Ukraine targeting a Russian command post in the Kursk region. The announcement was made by Oleg Kozhemyako, the regional governor. Gudkov’s death is considered one of the most significant losses for the Russian military since the extensive conflict with Ukraine began in 2022.
The attack reportedly occurred in Korenevo, a town close to the Ukrainian border, where Gudkov was overseeing operations at the frontline. Reports from Telegram channels associated with both Russian and Ukrainian military sources suggest that the strike resulted in the deaths of at least 10 other Russian soldiers.
Governor Kozhemyako confirmed the death of Major General Gudkov, noting his commitment to duty and active involvement in the field even after his promotion to a senior naval leadership role. Kozhemyako expressed through a Telegram statement that Gudkov did not cease visiting marine positions personally, extending condolences to the bereaved families.
Gudkov, who was appointed as Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Navy by Russian President Vladimir Putin in March 2025, previously led a Marine Brigade under Russia’s Pacific Fleet. His brigade was stationed in the volatile Kursk region, temporarily taken over by Ukrainian forces during a surprise offensive in August 2024 before being reclaimed by Russian troops.
While Gudkov had been honored for his military actions in Ukraine, he faced accusations of war crimes by Kyiv. Despite his high rank, he continued to maintain a presence on the front lines, which likely contributed to his vulnerability in the targeted strike.
Neither the Russian Ministry of Defence nor Ukrainian authorities have issued official statements regarding the missile attack.
The death of such a senior officer underscores the ongoing intensity of the conflict and demonstrates Ukraine’s capability to execute strikes deep within Russian-controlled areas, especially at vital command and control locations.
