Russia Deploys Nuclear-Capable 'Oreshnik' Missile in Attack on Ukraine's Lviv Oblast; Tensions Escalate

According to Ukrainian officials and monitoring sources, Russia has launched an attack on western Ukraine's Lviv Oblast using a nuclear-capable ballistic missile identified as Oreshnik. This development has heightened concerns about potential further escalation.

The head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, Maksym Kozytskyi, confirmed that the strike was directed at a critical infrastructure facility within the region. Residents in the area reported hearing more than ten loud explosions, which authorities suspect may be linked to multiple warheads associated with the missile.

Prior to the strike, Ukraine's Air Force issued a nationwide air raid alert following intelligence suggesting a potential missile launch from Russia's Kapustin Yar missile test range. Ukrainian Telegram monitoring channels also indicated that the missile threat originated from deep within Russian territory.

Officials have noted that Ukraine lacks air defense systems capable of intercepting this class of ballistic missile, highlighting the severity of the attack.

Simultaneously, Ukrainian monitoring sources reported approximately 100 Russian drones advancing toward Kyiv, indicating a coordinated attack from multiple angles. There are additional warnings that Moscow could launch more Oreshnik missiles within the next 24 hours.

The Oreshnik missile, associated with Russia’s RS-26 Rubezh program, is nuclear-capable and has previously been stationed in Belarus, putting several European cities within its possible range. Its reported deployment against Ukraine is seen by analysts as a significant escalation in Russia’s missile strategy and an extension of nuclear signaling amid the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian authorities are continuing to evaluate the damage, while air defense and emergency services remain on high alert as the security situation progresses.
