Retired Army Officer Killed in Jaipur Hit-and-Run; Local Outrage as Driver Granted Bail

A somber incident overshadowed the Independence Day festivities in Jaipur when Captain Narsaram Jajra, a 64-year-old retired Army officer, tragically died after being struck by an SUV while cycling on the Gandhi Path stretch.
Police reports indicate that the collision occurred on the morning of August 15. The SUV, driven by a woman named Surbhi Maheswari, collided with Captain Jajra and then fled the scene. The harrowing event was captured on CCTV, which recorded the vehicle hitting the officer, clad in a white T-shirt, before speeding off.
Witnesses and local residents rushed to assist. Captain Jajra's son, who was nearby, arrived at the scene and, with the help of others, transported him to SMS Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Authorities have filed an FIR at the Accident Police Station. The SUV involved in the incident has been confiscated, and the driver's license has been revoked. Despite her arrest, the suspect was granted bail shortly thereafter, leading to public discontent.
Constable Kishan Puri stated, “Further investigation is underway. The SUV and its driver were identified through CCTV footage, and necessary action has been initiated.”
This incident has sparked protests from residents in the Gandhi Path area, who claim the location has become notorious for speeding vehicles. The area is frequently used by senior citizens for morning walks and cycling.
One protestor commented, “We demand strict patrolling and installation of speed-breakers to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
The passing of Captain Jajra, a distinguished serviceman, has left the community in mourning and highlighted ongoing concerns about road safety and reckless driving in Jaipur.
