Rear Admiral Vidhyadhar Harke Takes Command of Maharashtra Naval Area

Rear Admiral Vidhyadhar Harke has taken over the role of Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra Naval Area (FOMA) from Rear Admiral Shantanu Jha, following a Change of Guard ceremony on July 31, 2026. This transition signifies a notable leadership shift within one of the Indian Navy's pivotal operational and administrative divisions on the western coastline.

Rear Admiral Harke, an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, and the Indian Naval War College in Goa, steps into this position with a wealth of operational knowledge garnered throughout a long and varied naval career that includes numerous command, staff, and training roles.

During his career, Rear Admiral Harke has held key positions both at sea and onshore. His command of significant vessels, such as the amphibious warfare ship INS Jalashwa and India's first indigenously built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, highlights his considerable experience in maritime operations and naval strategy.

Before his current appointment, he served as the Chief Staff Officer (Operations) at the Western Naval Command in Mumbai, where he was instrumental in managing operational planning and fleet readiness. Additionally, as the Flag Officer Sea Training at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi, he focused on advancing operational training and combat readiness throughout the navy.

In his new position as Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra Naval Area, Rear Admiral Harke will be responsible for overseeing naval establishments, coordinating coastal security, and providing logistical and administrative support to the navy's activities in Maharashtra. This area is crucial in bolstering the Western Naval Command's operational responsibilities and safeguarding significant naval assets along India's western seaboard.
