President Droupadi Murmu to Embark on Historic Submarine Sea Sortie on December 28
Droupadi Murmu, the President of India, is set to make a historic journey aboard an Indian Navy submarine from Karwar Harbour on December 28, as announced by her office.
With this event, President Murmu will become only the second Indian Head of State to undertake a submarine excursion. The first was former President A P J Abdul Kalam, who embarked on a similar journey on February 13, 2006, from Visakhapatnam.
This submarine trip is part of President Murmu's four-day visit to Goa, Karnataka, and Jharkhand, which begins on December 27. According to a statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan, she will leave for Goa in the evening of December 27.
A First in Aerial and Undersea Experience
President Murmu has already set a precedent as the first Indian President to fly in two of the Indian Air Force's frontline fighter aircraft. She participated in a sortie aboard a Rafale fighter jet on October 29, 2025, and earlier flew in a Sukhoi Su-30MKI in 2023.
The upcoming submarine journey continues to emphasize her active involvement with the Armed Forces and her focus on understanding India's defense capabilities in the air, sea, and undersea domains.
Other Key Engagements
After her naval engagement, President Murmu will proceed to Jharkhand to attend the centenary celebrations of Ol Chiki in Jamshedpur on Monday. On the same day, she will address the 15th convocation ceremony at the National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur.
On December 30, the President is scheduled to speak at the Antarrajyiy Jansanskritik Samagam Samaroh (Kartik Jatra) in Gumla.
The submarine outing at Karwar represents another significant milestone, showcasing the President's close association with India's armed forces and her commitment to emphasizing the nation's expanding strategic and military capabilities.
