PM Modi Unveils 'Sudarshan Chakra Mission' for Advanced National Defence System Development
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled the Sudarshan Chakra Mission, a comprehensive national security initiative designed to establish a multi-tiered defense system akin to Israel’s Iron Dome.
During his 79th Independence Day address from the Red Fort, which lasted a record 103 minutes, PM Modi outlined that this system aims to protect strategic, civilian, and religious sites in India from potential threats via air, land, and sea.
Modi emphasized, “By 2035, over the next ten years, we will expand, enhance, and modernize this national security framework. Inspired by Lord Shri Krishna, we have embraced the Sudarshan Chakra approach. This powerful system will not only thwart terrorist attacks but will also retaliate against the perpetrators.”
The envisioned system will encompass advanced surveillance, quick interception, and precision counter-attack capabilities, all developed and produced domestically. This initiative underscores the government's focus on achieving self-reliance in defense manufacturing, with Modi also stressing the importance of creating a native jet engine for India’s fighter aircraft program.
Defense specialists believe the Sudarshan Chakra Mission could potentially match the effectiveness of Israel’s Iron Dome, which reportedly has a 90% success rate in intercepting rockets from Hamas and Hezbollah.
The announcement coincided with commendations for the armed forces following the successful execution of Operation Sindoor. Modi noted that this operation delivered a “significant blow” to Pakistan in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in 26 casualties, primarily tourists. India's military response, launched on May 7, targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan over a span of four days, establishing what Modi termed a “new normal” in addressing cross-border terrorism.
The Sudarshan Chakra Mission aims, Modi stated, not only to neutralize airborne threats but also to send a strong deterrent message to adversaries, ensuring any future aggression is met with prompt and decisive action.
Slated for deployment by 2035, the system is anticipated to be a pivotal element of India’s next-generation national security framework, bolstering its deterrent capabilities amid a rapidly evolving regional security landscape.
