Pakistan Awards Nishan-e-Imtiaz to US CENTCOM Chief in Recognition of Counterterrorism Efforts

The government of Pakistan has awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military), one of its highest military distinctions, to General Michael E. Kurilla, the chief of the US Central Command (CENTCOM). This recognition was given in acknowledgment of General Kurilla's role in enhancing strategic defense cooperation between the US and Pakistan. The award was presented by Pakistan’s President, Asif Ali Zardari, during General Kurilla’s recent visit to the country.
General Kurilla was received with a ceremonial Tri-Services Guard of Honour and was lauded for his significant contributions to regional security. His efforts to deepen counterterrorism collaboration between the United States and Pakistan were highlighted by the country’s state broadcaster, Radio Pakistan.
The award coincides with General Kurilla's remarks in June where he praised Pakistan as an “exceptional partner in the counter-terrorism world.” He had also stressed the importance of the United States maintaining strong relationships with both India and Pakistan, stating that these relationships were not mutually exclusive.
Kurilla's comments provoked a notable reaction from India, especially considering recent cross-border incidents, such as the one in Pahalgam, and historical events including the 2008 Mumbai attacks. India’s Ministry of External Affairs reiterated Pakistan’s history of harboring terrorism, referencing the asylum provided to Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad.
The award's presentation coincides with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, visiting Washington, where he met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Discussions focused on expanding bilateral trade and strategic cooperation. Rubio expressed his appreciation for Pakistan's “partnership in countering terrorism and maintaining regional stability.”
The granting of the Nishan-e-Imtiaz to General Kurilla is seen as a diplomatic gesture aimed at reinforcing Islamabad’s defense credentials and bolstering its international image amid ongoing global scrutiny concerning its counterterrorism efforts.
