NSG K9 Donny Gets COAS Commendation Card for Role After Red Fort Blast

A specialist explosive-detection dog from the National Security Guard’s K9 Unit, Donny, has been awarded the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Commendation Card for his role in counter-terrorism operations after the Red Fort blast in November 2025.

The award was presented on Independence Day 2026 and recognises Donny’s performance in two high-risk operations that officials say helped security agencies identify explosive traces, secure sensitive sites and reduce the risk of follow-on attacks.

Donny was first deployed at the Red Fort on November 10, 2025, after a VBIED blast at the historic site. The attack killed 12 people and left 32 others critically injured. In the aftermath, when the area was still strewn with debris and the security situation remained tense, the canine was sent in to screen the blast site for traces of explosives.

According to officials, Donny detected and confirmed the presence of explosive traces, allowing forensic and security teams to secure the area and continue their investigation. His role was particularly important at a crime scene where authorities were concerned about possible secondary threats.

Two days later, on November 12, 2025, Donny was again deployed, this time at Khandawali in Faridabad, where security teams were checking a vehicle suspected to be linked to the transport of explosives associated with the Red Fort attack.

During that operation, Donny once more detected explosive traces inside the vehicle. Officials said the input provided to investigators was critical and helped security agencies prevent the possibility of further attacks.

Security officials said Donny’s work stood out because he was able to operate effectively under extreme pressure and in difficult conditions. His interventions were credited with helping teams identify threats quickly and support public safety during a period of heightened alert.

The COAS Commendation Card is awarded for exceptional dedication, professionalism and courage in service of the nation. Donny’s recognition draws attention to the role of specialist K9 teams in explosive detection, counter-terrorism operations and post-blast security procedures.

It also highlights the contribution of trained service animals working alongside security personnel in some of the most sensitive and dangerous operational environments. In Donny’s case, officials said his performance after the Red Fort blast has become a clear example of how specialist canine units can provide critical capabilities in complex security operations, where rapid detection of explosives may help prevent further loss of life.
