NDA Havaldar Jagtar Singh Found Dead on Pune Railway Track; Court of Inquiry Ordered
Pune, 2 September 2026: Havaldar Jagtar Singh, a serving soldier posted at the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, was found dead on a railway track in Pune on 1 September 2026, prompting the Army to order a Court of Inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The body was found at around 5:30 p.m. by personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) on the railway stretch between Khadki and Shivajinagar. It was then recovered and moved to the Government Hospital at Aundh for post-mortem examination, which is expected to be part of the official record before the inquiry.
Officials identified the deceased as Havaldar Jagtar Singh, a native of Mansa district in Punjab, who was serving at the tri-service training academy at Khadakwasla. No further personal details, including his age or parent unit, have been released at this stage, pending completion of formal procedures.
A defence release issued on Wednesday said that his next of kin have been informed and that all necessary assistance is being extended to the bereaved family. The death has caused distress among his comrades and the wider service community at the academy.
The National Defence Academy at Khadakwasla is India’s premier joint-services institution for training officer cadets of the Army, Navy and Air Force. The academy’s role makes any death involving serving personnel on its posted strength a matter of immediate administrative and military attention.
According to officials, the Court of Inquiry has been convened to establish the sequence of events and examine all relevant aspects of the death. Such proceedings are standard under service regulations when a serving member of the forces dies in circumstances that require formal fact-finding.
At present, no official cause of death has been announced. Authorities have not attributed the incident to an accident, foul play or self-harm, and have said that any such speculation would be premature until the medical findings and inquiry are complete.
The academy and local civil authorities are coordinating the legal and administrative formalities connected with the case. Further details are expected after the post-mortem report is received and the Court of Inquiry begins its initial proceedings.
