NALSA Launches Legal Aid Initiative for Soldiers' Families

In a historic move for India, the families of soldiers will now receive proactive legal support while their loved ones serve in challenging and remote areas. This milestone initiative, known as the NALSA Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana 2025, was officially launched in Srinagar by Justice Surya Kant, the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and the forthcoming Chief Justice of India.

The scheme aims to alleviate the domestic legal burdens faced by military personnel, allowing them to concentrate on their national duties without being distracted by unresolved legal disputes back home.

The launch event was attended by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials indicated that the program emerged in response to the challenges highlighted by Operation Sindoor, a recent counter-terror operation that underscored the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers. Sources noted that Justice Surya Kant was profoundly affected by the hardships experienced by the armed forces and sought to identify ways the legal system could provide meaningful assistance.

Justice Kant reportedly emphasized the responsibility of the legal community to support those who put their lives at risk for the country, ensuring that their families do not suffer in silence concerning legal issues.

The initiative addresses a significant gap: soldiers stationed in high-conflict or remote regions often cannot attend court hearings for property disputes, land cases, or family matters. For instance, a soldier posted in Jammu and Kashmir may find it difficult to secure leave to attend a court hearing in Kerala.

Through the Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana, NALSA will ensure that these legal cases are pursued in court with adequate representation. The legal support will also be extended to paramilitary personnel, including those from the BSF, CRPF, ITBP, and other forces serving in similarly challenging conditions.

Justice Surya Kant is slated to formally assume the role of Chief Justice of India on November 24, 2025. This legal aid initiative represents one of his final actions as NALSA chairman and leaves a lasting legacy for military welfare from the judiciary.
