Naik Arvind Kumar: A Tribute to the Fallen 9 Para SF Commando Who Displayed Ultimate Bravery in Jammu and Kashmir

In the storied chronicles of India's Special Forces, the tale of Naik Arvind Kumar emerges as a testament to valor, expertise, and steadfast loyalty to the nation. A member of the elite 9th Battalion of The Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), his life was committed to executing some of the most perilous missions of the Indian Army. On May 5, 2023, amidst a formidable counter-terrorism operation in the thick forests of the Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir, he sacrificed his life while confronting heavily armed insurgents.

At the age of 32, Naik Arvind Kumar embodied the esteemed traditions of the Indian Army, showcasing fearlessness, loyalty to fellow soldiers, and selfless service. His martyrdom, alongside four other Para SF commandos, underscored the significant sacrifices made by India’s Special Forces in safeguarding national security.

Naik Arvind Kumar hailed from Suri village in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, a region known for producing courageous soldiers. Born around 1991, he was raised in a modest family steeped in traditional values, discipline, and national pride.

The youngest of three siblings, Arvind was the son of Shri Ujjwal Singh, a retired Public Works Department employee, and Smt Nirmala Devi. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in physical fitness and military life, dreaming of serving in the armed forces like many from the hill regions.

After completing his early education locally, he focused on joining the armed forces. His determination paid off when he enlisted in the Indian Army in 2012.

Despite his demanding career, Arvind Kumar stayed close to his family roots. He married Smt Bindu Devi, and they had two daughters, Shanvi and Shanvika. Friends and family remember him as a devoted son, husband, and father who balanced his family duties with the intense demands of Special Forces service.

Upon joining the Indian Army, Arvind Kumar was selected for The Parachute Regiment, a premier combat unit. He later joined the 9 Para (Special Forces), renowned for conducting high-stakes missions including counter-terrorism, reconnaissance, and unconventional warfare.

Selection for the Para Special Forces is known for its rigorous standards, with few completing the grueling probation and training. Candidates are tested on physical endurance, mental toughness, and combat skills.

Arvind Kumar earned the esteemed maroon beret and Balidan badge, representing sacrifice and elite military prowess.

Over his eleven-year service, he participated in numerous operations, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, earning respect for his skills and professional dedication, eventually rising to the rank of Naik.

A notable period in his career was his tenure with the 51 Special Action Group (SAG) of the National Security Guard (NSG), India's top counter-terrorism unit known as the “Black Cats.”

The NSG is responsible for crucial operations like counter-hijack and urban warfare. Selection for NSG duty reflects a soldier's operational excellence.

Naik Arvind Kumar was recognized for his exceptional skills during his time with 51 SAG, earning the “Top Men” badge for his outstanding performance.

He underwent advanced training, including air assault and specialized tactical courses, marking him as a highly trained operator capable of handling complex situations.

Beyond his military career, Naik Arvind Kumar excelled as an athlete and marksman, representing the Indian Army in competitions abroad, including in Germany and Singapore, winning medals in athletics and shooting.

His combination of combat expertise, athletic ability, and humility earned admiration from peers and superiors alike.

In early May 2023, security forces stepped up anti-terror operations in Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir, following intelligence on terrorist movements in the Kandi Forest area.

The terrorists were linked to an ambush on April 20, 2023, that claimed the lives of five Indian Army personnel.

Due to the threat level, 9 Para (SF) teams were deployed. The dense forests and rugged terrain posed significant challenges for the mission.

The operation commenced on May 3, 2023, employing drones, surveillance, sniffer dogs, and ground assault teams.

On May 5, 2023, forces engaged terrorists in a fortified cave, sparking a fierce gunfight.

Naik Arvind Kumar was part of the assault team leading the operation.

During close-quarters combat, Special Forces used mortars and grenades to suppress enemy positions.

However, the terrorists detonated an explosive inside the cave, resulting in a massive blast injuring several soldiers.

Naik Arvind Kumar sustained critical injuries and later succumbed to his wounds.

After his death, Naik Arvind Kumar's remains were returned to his village in Himachal Pradesh on May 6, 2023, where thousands paid their respects.

He was cremated with full military honors on May 7. Soldiers presented the national flag to his wife amidst emotional scenes and chants honoring him.

The Himachal Pradesh government announced financial aid for the family and a government job for his widow. A local school was renamed in his honor.

Leaders, veterans, and citizens nationwide expressed admiration for the Para commando who sacrificed his life defending the country.

In January 2024, Naik Arvind Kumar was posthumously awarded the Mention-in-Despatches for his bravery and dedication during counter-terrorism operations.

His name was added to the Roll of Honour at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, ensuring his legacy is remembered by future generations.
