Nagpur to Host Full-Scale Rafale Jet Production Facility Under Dassault Initiative

Nagpur is set to become a key center for the production of Rafale fighter jets as Dassault Aviation, the French aerospace company, plans to establish a comprehensive final assembly line at its existing Dassault Reliance Aerospace Limited (DRAL) facility located in the MIHAN Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

This development will make Nagpur the first city outside of France to produce Rafale jets from start to finish. The facility has the capacity to manufacture up to two jets monthly. Expanding from just producing key components like wings and fuselage to full assembly represents a significant advancement for India's defense manufacturing and aerospace industries. Upon approval, production could commence within three years, potentially delivering all 114 jets under the current procurement plan within six years, thereby surpassing the timelines currently observed in France.

The role of Nagpur is strategically vital for the Indian Air Force (IAF), which currently operates 31 active fighter squadrons against an authorized strength of 42. In addition to meeting domestic needs, the city is anticipated to support export activities, with countries like Indonesia likely to receive jets produced at the Nagpur facility. This positions Nagpur alongside Toulouse, France, as a major hub for global aerospace production and export.

The DRAL facility, a joint venture between Dassault Aviation and the Reliance ADA Group, is already involved in producing crucial Rafale components. Establishing a full assembly line is expected to generate thousands of jobs in sectors such as engineering, aviation, component manufacturing, and electronics, thereby nurturing a broader aerospace ecosystem in the MIHAN SEZ. Hyderabad will also support these efforts by manufacturing Rafale fuselages through Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and managing engine assembly and maintenance via Safran, France. TASL plans to start fuselage production in 2027–28, with a capacity of up to two fuselages per month.

The Rafale jets produced in Nagpur will incorporate the advanced F4 standard, featuring upgraded radar and electronic warfare capabilities, improved integration with unmanned systems, and specific upgrades for the Indian context, including engine enhancements developed in collaboration with the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE). The government is targeting 60% localization, which could result in a cost reduction of around 30% and bolster India's position in defense exports.

Should the Defence Procurement Board approve the proposal, Nagpur's complete Rafale production line will not only expedite the delivery of India's fighter jets but also transform the city's industrial landscape, increase job opportunities, and reinforce India's self-reliance and export capabilities in the aerospace sector.
